What Does OTC Mean?

OTC or Over-The-Counter is the latest and most commonly used method of Stock Market Trading nowadays. Easy and Fast-paced, this method can be done via Telephone or Computer.

Over The Counter stock market is a network of Brokers and Investors that trades and exchanges stocks and bonds, not listed on an Exchange. Most transactions can be easily done and privately negotiated over the phone or via Internet.

The number of brokers, investors, small and medium sized companies has grown, and could possibly grow more in the coming years.

According to the statistics as of October 2006, the OTC Market consists of more than 220 Market Makers already. They are the OTC players, who deals and compete to buy and sell your shares, they set their own limits as to how much they bid on shares, and asks for the stocks being traded on the market.

Most companies, brokers and investors, especially small companies and networks, prefer Over the Counter stock market method rather than being listed on an exchange because of low investor interest, less requirements, and low volume of share trading.

Unlike being listed on an Exchange, small and medium sized companies can be easily listed in the OTC market without having the need to declare the company’s assets and revenues. OTC allows any company that files to be listed to trade on its market without going through any further security and requirement checks.

Another reason why most investors choose Over the Counter stock marketing is its accessibility. You can easily track the status of your shares and investment by just visiting the Over the Counter Bulletin Board or OCBB, as what it is commonly known.

Yes, that easy and accessible.

However, simple as it may seem, OTC stock market trading, has its own share of risks and hazards that one must consider alongside its perquisites.

Over the Counter Stock Market trading has a higher percentage of being infested by Internet Investor Scams and Frauds. Since the security is not as high as those Investment Listings imposed by Stock Exchange, anyone is prone to being scammed and swindled.

So to those who are planning and thinking of starting to trade in Over the Counter Market, analyze first the company you want to invest in. Do your own background research. Take a step inside and pretend to be one of its auditors. There’s nothing best but to learn and understand how to read one’s financials. That way, you’ll know where your investment/money is heading.
